Kelis & Nas Divorce Confirmed
According to VIBE.com, a spokesperson for Kelis has confirmed that the couple has separated after almost 5 years together.
“I can confirm that she has filed for divorce,” a spokesperson for Kelis told VIBE. “We request the media to respect her privacy during this very difficult time.” At around 3:45pm PST, high-powered attorney Laura Wasser (who has also represented Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie, and Stevie Wonder) filed a divorce petition today on behalf of Kelis, citing irreconciable differences. The bombshell comes amid recent reports that the acclaimed rhymer and influential R&B vixen were expecting their first child together—a son. Kelis is currently seven months pregnant.

I think Kelis is making a mistake and she’s going to lose a lot of respect and fans…but I guess that doesn’t matter since may still take care of her; Kelis attorney wants to get child and spousal support. I can’t believe a “supposed” icon is dependent and needs support. What about independence? A yo webs. What Nas could have done? I know he ain’t do crap like what Chris did to Rhianna. It can’t be cheating because I saw signs of Kelis advocating the openness. For instance (& if you ARE Nas # 1 fan, you should know this), there’s an interlude on Nas’s Street’s Disciple album with both Nas and Kelis talking about Nas’ past flings. The song starts off with Nas talking about sticking a Heineken bottle up a girl. Then there’s that track called, “Popular Thug.” In that song, Nas is talking about how he is a heartbreaker and Kelis is singing the hook. Now this trend goes both ways. Nas lets her be freaky all she wants. Have you ever noticed Kelis’ apparel when doing pictures with Nas? They are REAL revealing and seductive. They both freely describe their sexuality in tracks called, “In Public” (describing having sex in public with everyone watching), and then the song, “Blindfold Me” (In the video, Nas is blindfolded and left alone in I think an empty parking lot). So there you go. If the freaky and sluttyness are accepted, what could be the problem? Unless Kelis thought Nas was gay or something. I want you to logically tell me and everyone what Nas could have possibly done wrong. Again, I know it ain’t the Chris and Rhianna crap because I don’t see any facts off any hitting or bruises. Anyway, I ain’t trying to point fingers…if it’s done, it’s done. However, she don’t need to be come at Nas for freaking support except for the child and that’s it. GodSonX7, slow down, I never once said that I felt Kelis should get alimony or take Nas’s money or whatever you are accusing me of advocating. All I am saying is that if nas was being unfaithful and/or verbally abusive or worse, those are the only reason I can see her leaving him at this point and that is sad. I’ve heard all of the songs you mentioned and know that Nas and Kelis are a very sexual couple but I still believe they had basic relationship rules where its not ok to cheat & not ok to treat the other person in a disrespectful manner. I am not saying it is fact that Nas did this but if he did it is wrong…and I agree he should not have to give her anything more than support for her child, physically and financially. I actually hope this is either a) not true or b) blows over because I think those two are a great couple and hope they can stay together and raise that child as a couple.

Ok webs. But, I don’t want this to look like it’s all Nas’ fault either. I do not think Nas is the verbal or abusive type. In the situation with Carmen, she was just plan obsessed and abusive, not Nas. Nas made a two versions of “Love is All We Need” with Mary J Blidge. One made it to the commercial realm, the other didn’t. The one that didn’t, Nas had stated, “Baby moms tried to stab me.” So if anything, Carmen (the one he was referring to), was actually trying to stab him; hence, there’s evidence of women are abusive to him.” Nas had to dead that. Then later on, you see the Carmen assisting Nas with his beef with Jay. As you know, she came out with that book telling the truth of the relationship with Jay. She also mentioned in an interview that Nas tapped Beyonce once time during when the “You Owe Me” video was made. Why would Carmen defend Nas if he had hurt her? Anyway, I never saw any evidence of abuse ever committed by Nas; however, I’ve seen evidence of abuse towards Nas and the abuser helping him years later. There’s no evidence of abuse with Kelis so lets not degrade Nas’ character and speculate that unless it comes forward. Lastly, people may think Nas & Kelis of having a basic relationship; however, there is no evidence supporting that. However, there is evidence supporting otherwise. What basic woman would put up with listening to her man describing in DETAIL what he did with his past flings? That Heineken bottle would be too much for even my wife. My wife loves Nas and Kelis; however, even she wonders how Kelis put of with it. The way Kelis dresses around Nas is very promiscuous. Most men would be offended with their women on camera like that. As we know, Nas is a playa from is music. As you know, he did a song with Snoop called, “Play On Playa” on the Hip Hop is Dead LP. Kelis well knew what she was getting into with Nas and her actions dictate that in her music…just like how you can determine Nas’ character based on the music he present. People believe the relation was basic; however, evidence clearly show it was not. It was very promiscuous, perhaps raunchy, just like what Nas’ music presents. Kelis knew what she was getting in because she went along with the raunchy and freakyness; thus, advocating it. If you can determine a person’s character by their Music, why can’t you determine a relationship by music? Look at Bobbie and Whitney. They did love each other and they had music supporting that. However, the problems were drugs and abuse, and the EVIDENCE DID COME OUT. So again, let please not speculate the worse until it does. From logical thought; based on evidence and not wishful thinking, Nas and Kelis relationship was not basic but very promiscuous….and there is nothing wrong with that. :)

I agree with “luvthemasacouple.” I there is something fishy. Maybe Kelis was just trying to scare Nas or get him upset…perhaps the bark is worse than the bite. Perhaps they are secretly coming out with an album together and this is just to get people’s attention. Although the album theory is not that logical being the Kelis is 7 months pregnant. I doubt that she is in any capacity to make an album. So the most logical would be that the emotions is flaring from the pregnacy…or…she is just a trifling gold-digger waiting for the perfect moment to trap a man and using the kid because she clearly can’t hold her own as an Icon…as a star…that we all respected her to be.

honestly, I don’t know Nas or Kelis and therefore cannot be a judge of either of their characters. Nas has been my favorite rapper for 12 years and I really hope that he did not do the things that he was accused of…actually I’m hoping that due to the incorrect wedding date on the divorce decree that this is all a load of crap. I am just speaking hypothetically here…btw theres no need for you to name all of Nas’ songs for me or tell me about his history…I KNOW ALL OF THIS…I’m just speaking impartially on the matter and stating “what ifs.” I do agree with you that she may have been trying to scare him…because that is one hell of a warning shot, but that also suggests that he was doing something that may have been harmful to their relationship…just saying, neither me nor you know these folks though I love Nas’ music and Kelis’ earlier music so don’t get offended when someone comments on their characters, these are stars, you only see very small portions of their lives really.

I’m not naming his songs just you should know them. I’m using them as reference because I’m not just typing to you, but you everyone reading this thread. Not everyone is up on the history; I’ve been smacking down fools on the Official DefJam site for sometime now; you should check the site out since you are a big Nas fan. I am also very upset with the speculation about the Spousal Support and Child Support. If she’s really an Icon, she can support herself; people will have more respect for her. I understand the need for support of the child; however, I believe Nas (and from this songs) will would do the right thing without the legal crap involved. If Nas doesn’t man up on that, it will come out and he will be dissed; and if that ever did occur, she would definitely win at that juncture. He’s smarter than that and Kelis should know this and give him some credit without bringing the cop at his doorstep. Lastly, I also do not like the speculation that Nas is the only the one doing something wrong. Before I got to this thread, all I’ve been reading were joints like, “we are here for you K”….“lets hope Nas mans up and take care of this child K”….I know this is K’s unioffical site…but respect Nas too. Nas will take of this child; he’s already been supporting is daughter, he freaking had a song dedicated to her on the Street’s Disciple album and a verse for her on “Book of Rhymes” on the God’s Son Album. Let’s not gang up on Nas…let’s just hope they resolve it and keep it going. If Kelis adores her fans, she should be paying attention to what her fans think. Lots of her fans of very upset about this. A good potion of them doesn’t want the break up. I enjoyed their promiscuous relationship. I saw that they loved each other unconditionally. GodSon, I am not trying to gang up on Nas…I have had many an argument in my life in support of Nas on various issues & I don’t know who was right or wrong…or what the heck is really going on with the divorce situation. I’m just basically giving my opinion on what I heard possibly happened…and I am basically saying the same thing I would say if anyone (famous or not) was accused of the same thing. Once again, I am one of the biggest Nas fans you will ever meet but I’m just looking at both sides of the story. Just because he is my favorite rapper doesn’t mean I should believe he is perfect, and I in no way assume that Kelis is perfect either. I think its funny that you say you enjoyed their promiscuous relationship, lol. Did you hang out with them? How do you know their relationship was not exclusive? If it wasn’t then those sex tape rumors and the cheating rumors would not have made the dent that they did…and I do think they did cause some problems.

I enjoyed their relationship to the fact of how they expressed themselves to each other; it seemed genuine and the music and works that they both displayed have hints of their relationship possibly not on the exclusive side; however, private yet in public. I personally don’t feel that relationships should be like the traditional Western European marriage setup that most are accustomed to. Anywho, regardless of who fault it is, whether it is Nas or Kelis, should not warrant the legal action, should not warrant anyone disrespecting an artist, nor should it warrant people speculating whether or not Nas will take care of this children when he has already has demonstrated his capability of caring for them. Hey myob, unfortunately, they are Icons, we buy their albums, they have websites (official and unofficial) with message boards and blogs to promote the talks. Besides, on Nas’ recent album, there’s a track called, “Ya’ll My Niggas,” which in the chorus, Nas advocates his fans to talk about him, whether good or bad, especially in public, as long as he is the subject…cause…we are his niggas. Now, I guess webs and I are doing the right thing by him by discussing? Are we not? However, my role as a fan is to not accept any bad talk of my favorite artist. Check out the Nas Def Jam message board. Perhaps, in the end, maybe this marriage/divorce is just to get people talking. Nas has a way of doing that…usually thru controversy. Untitled was politically controversial. Hip Hop is Dead was controversial because many hip hop artists denied that; but it was true because only crap was coming out at the time. Streets Disciple was very controversial; I can’t really describe this one, except that he made some ill threats at Jay which tracks like Nazareth Savage and Suicide Bounce. In that album, he also revealed his relationship with Kelis and how controversial it was and how they operate with each other. That album shows hints of un-exclusiveness. God’s Son was controversial because it dropped on Friday the 13th, which hip hop albums normally drop on a Tuesday or Thursday, and it was a follow up album from Stillmatic to continue to the attack on Jay. “I Can” was track that was very controversial on the album, especially the third verse, where Nas describes where we really come from. Then there’s Stillmatic. It was controversial because everyone thought Nas fell off since his previous album dropped like 2 or 3 years ago and was not a real favorite, Jay was the supposed King, and Rocafella had shit on smash. That album was his 2nd 5 mic album, next to illmatic. Nastradamas came out the same year of I AM. I AM was controversial because it was heavily bootlegged and was Nas’ first appearance ever since the death of Pac and Big; that album was supposed to be a double; however, because of the Mp3 Online emergence, the album was bootlegged and Nas scrapped the 2nd part of it, but then came with Nastradamus later on in the year. It Was Written was controversial because Nas displayed a totally different style (that Esco/Mafioso style), which was in contrast to Illmatic’s hardcore style. Lastly, Illmatic was controversial because Nas provided a whole different style of rhyming…it was a perfect style…he raised the bar…it was his first album…and it was 5 mics…unbelievable for an artist to get 5 mics on his first album. That album was created in Large P’s basement…it had only 9 tracks, and intro, and was only about a half an hour long. So there you go. Nas thrives on controversy, and hopefully this marriage thing is another one of those controversial events. From the wrong marriage date to the abrupt end when they seemed to have loved each other so much…displays much controversy…and from Nas’ track record…he will make it out on top as always. I just hope Kelis will be there with him, I hope they find some resolution, and I hope for the best for their yet to be born son.

I agree with you Kelisfan89; however, I’m not suggesting that they are swingers. But I know, since the beginning of Nas’ career, he has also been against the Western system, whether it because of politics, or religion, or just how you live…your culture. To better understand, I’m going to provide some documentaries that supports “Untitled” and my theory. Now you will understand a little just shortly after an hour of the 1st documentary. However, you will understand more if you watched the whole two parts. The information that I am providing is also on the Nas message board at defjam.com. I’m just going to cut and past because I’m just tired of typing. :) Lastly, Nas has repped this for a LONG, LONG, time, therefore, I kind of understand the relationship with Kelis, if he kept it real with her and if she really understood the kind of person he is and what he represents. Nas doesn’t make music just to make music. He’s give you content. And if you are telling that I can’t get an idea of an artist based on the content provided….then you know what…screw you.

Previously; in this thread, I presented a link the the “Loose Change” documentary, which it’s info in one of the themes of Nas’ “Untitled” LP. Well, I got two more documentaries that are much more well-rounded, much more interesting, much more controversial. The information, will really change the way you think…the way you believe…just don’t commit suicide people.

After you review the documentaries (both are about 2 hours long, but it’s well worth it), you will wonder why “Untitled” only got 4.5 mics when it should have been 5. However, you will soon realize that the reason behind that was politically motivated and The Source couldn’t have done it because it would give Nas too much props (That he well deserved too). He would’ve been the first ever to have 3 five mic albums. He was indeed the first ever to have two 5 mic albums. However, The Source re-reviewed Jay-Z, “Reasonable Doubt” album and change the rating to 5 mic (I believe Jay paid off the The Source to do that; this occurred right after Nas received 5 mics for Stillmatic).
You will also realize once review the documentaries, that not only the album’s name (Untitled), should have been named, “Nigger,” it should also have the name called “Zeitgeist,” which is the name of the documentaries. You’ll also know why I love Nas so much; he spits the real deep shit all the time…there’s no rapper, no artist, no entertainer doing this. Kelis should be proud to be with a guy like that. Since they are going thru some turmoil, people will be watch and hitting this board….perfect time to present this info:

Zeitgeist as three parts:
The 1st part discusses about the lies of religion (and the Western marriage system; I’m just a fan and I know what Nas represents; Kelis should have known this. Religion, Christianity, the also marriage system is all bull; therefore, we should not be bound to those set rules. Nas may have just married Kelis just to make her happy. For some reason, women need to have the piece of paper to show love even though paper has nothing to do with it…again…love is unconditional…love is the joining of two souls. The documentaries also teaches about Nature, and human urges are a part of nature…you cannot deny nature…nature will contend with you…religion made you believe that whatever natural human urges we all have are bad. I know Nas and Kelis expressed this in their relationship. It looked like Kelis understood this. Nas supports this in basically all of his albums; so she should have know what she was getting into. It kind of like the Matrix movie…you can take the blue pill and keep living a lie, or take the red pill and see the truth. I thought she was on the red pill side, but it looks like she’s going for the blue pill now. You probably won’t understand until you review the documentaries. Please do. For the record, I’m on the red pill drug…most of ya’ll are on the blue joints).

i just want to say that i commend you for being a true Nas fan and liking real hiphop but dont pass judgement on kelis or nas.. i dont think kelis is a goldigger not at all and i dont think nas is an abusive person either.. both are great and talented people and i doubt that kelis is going to loose fans…

Thanks Kelisfan89. I know that I don’t know their whole personal life; however, I’m just giving an educated guess based off the evidence provided. I believe my guess has just as much merit as any other guess…if not more since I’m using evidence and not just plain dumb guessing. As you see, I am really upset over the situation. I never appeared on this board until the this divorce thing came up; I always been lingering on the Nas Def Jam site. I really don’t want them splitting. I was searching for her site so I could post my thoughts about this situation and this popped up first so here I am. I hope this will all blow over in time and they will still be together. However, until then, it’s back to war, back to the grind, and back to knocking people out on the boards! You know how it is since you’re a Pac. Pac, like Nas, teaches their fans to stand up for what they believe in and fight. They both were very controversial. When Young Jeezy had beef with Nas because of the Hip Hop is Dead name…I was right on his board giving his fans the drill, the business. Now they worked things out, they’re friends and label mates. I’m still attacking Jay-Z fans even though Nas and Jay had squashed the beef; I don’t think I would every stop cuz Jay and went there too far and I never forgive him; until he truly does something positive for his people…not just making money. Jay needs to be revolutionary. I used to attack Pac fans back in the day…but it’s been like 12 years now so…I’m done with that…unless…someone really gets hostile. Peace :)

anyways, i know how u feel about jay-z b/c i cant stand him..when he remade 2pacs song me and my girlfriend w/ beyonce and then tried not to give credit to 2pac.. i became so pissed..jay z is overated..also i was mad at jeezy too when he attacked Nas about the hiphop is dead thing…
anyway lets hope that Kelis and Nas stay together or atleast be civil to one another (which i think they will)

well I’m a Nas and Pac fan…they are both in my top 5 of all time (Nas being #1 of course); I think its more than possible to be fans of 2 people who don’t always get along. Jay-Z on the other hand I always had a few problems with, but that began before the Nas beef…then he just went way too far & too personal with the beef and that solidified what I had been saying. & it agitates me that him & Beyonce think its cute not to claim each other as a couple…and honestly if he was not rich/powerful I doubt she would have ever looked in his direction. Thats what I love/loved about Nas & Kelis, they are both real people who aren’t/weren’t afraid to tell the world they were in love & I could see them together even if one or neither of them was famous because they are a pretty even match.

It’s okay webs; I’m ‘bout to go off on a tangent too. I always thought Jay and Beyonce was all arranged. Jay’s really a bigger fan than all of us put together. Like Nas said in Ether, “In ’88 you was getting chased through your building, callin my crib and I ain’t even give you my numbers,” “You a fan, a phony, a fake, a pussy, a Stan,” “Wanted to be on every last one of my classics.” Anywho, Nas admits that Jay was dicksucking him. Now, Jay went after Carmen and Beyonce. Both were ex-flings of Nas. Jay went after Carmen so he later on expose the relationship in order to get at Nas (Nas also admits this in, “Last Real Nigga Alive” off of the God’s Son LP). Then strangely, Jay-Z hooks up with Beyonce. As we know, and thru that Carmen interview, Nas had a thing with Beyonce during the time when the “You Owe Me” video dropped. Nas even admits this in the actual song where he said, “Let you wear my big chain if we get it popping,” and you saw Beyonce wearing the chain. I always thought that Jay got lonely when Nas hooked up with Kelis, so he hooked up with Beyonce. Then Jay took his line (Dead Presidents) and made it a song. Then he made songs with the same names as Nas’ (“Come Get Me” was a song off Nastradamus, which as an attack towards Jay. Jay responded with “Come and Get Me” Vol III S. Carter). Then after the beef, then the retirement (Who retires from rap or from any music gender anyway? I mean, I never heard of Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, or Al Green retiring.), Jay-Z paid 10 mil to Nas just so he could partner with him at Def Jam. Basically, Jay-Z is a super fan of Nas and likes taking whatever Nas had once took. From his style to his girls. Now (getting back on topic) Kelis better watch out because if she leaves Nas, Jay is going to be there right at her doorstep licking his donkey lips just for her. And you know Jay-Z will pay anything for what he wants. I don’t think the fans would want K with J. LoL. :)

I get the same reception at the Def Jam site when I present that deep hardcore info; it takes awhile for someone to be bravehearted and post to the ill topics. Maybe I’m asking for too much for a girly site, no? I believe this kind of info can save lives, and once you know the truth you can’t go back. You can’t go back Kelis; you can’t go back being a normal hoodrat (that rhymed :)). You got to accept the responsibility of being a Queen and handle all the issues that a Queen handles for her King, no? I’m doing my thing too. Right now, I’m finishing up my AA in IT with Western International University; all of my schooling is done online. After my AA, I’m going for the BA in U of P. Right now, I’m caught up with my work and it’s hard to find people (girl or guy) to discuss these controversial issues. Usually the dudes talk about this but lately, it’s beaen the ladies (not online; offline) gravitating to the info. It’s my first time posting this stuff and not that many are up on it even though the films came out in 2007 and 2008 respectively. I’m thinking about writing at report about for school. I already wrote about the 16th Amendment (the tax amendment) being unconstitutional (they also talk about this in the 1st documentary). But I don’t want a teacher/instructor opinion; I want a regulars person opinion; the stuff that’s in the films affect regular people. For the record, I’ve been on the Dean’s list 3 straight years, GPA 3.48. Honestly,hip hop is dead, rap sucks; however, Nas is the only rapper/MC that keeps this college mind interested. Anywho…Happy Mother’s Day to Kelis and all other mommies! I hope Nas surprises Kelis and make it a special day for her. I also hope that she gives him a chance to make it up to her. People make mistakes; we all are human. It is our imperfections that makes us perfect. Not saying that Nas did make a mistake but….just in case. :)

Yeah, & I don’t blame him either. I feel like it is wrong to divorce a man but stay married to his money. Child support & joint custody of the child is all that needs to happen here. Plus it stated that she was asking for the spousal support because she is pregnant & cannot work, but I watch her online cooking show & she definitely said she just finished 2 albums & was releasing them this year, and she did a show last month (while 7 months pregnant), so the excuse that she can’t work is kinda lame…I think she’s just trying to make the guy pay. I can’t blame her for being upset b/c divorcing while 7 months pregnant cannot be fun, but I don’t believe she should get spousal support, I just don’t believe in it.

yeah, its pretty sad to see though. They were such a cute couple. But if the story if true & she found out he was cheating I can see why she may be the way she is right now…after all this is the same woman who made “I Hate You So Much Right Now” & “Get Along With You” — like I said though, its just hard to say what went wrong…they were so perfect for a while, then you started noticing no wedding rings on fingers like a year or 2 ago and then this…almost seems like Nas gets tired or relationships after he’s been in them for a long time…I dunno, he may need to seek counseling or something, he seems somewhat incapable of being faithful for long periods of time…not blaming him for everything but it just seems like this is probably 95% his fault & Kelis just wasn’t taking no shit.

I definitely agree that her friends are leaking the shit to the media…I mean who else would know some of this info…its really not cool, especially being that they are both pretty private people. I think they need some counseling if you ask me. Theres some deeper issues going on that we don’t & shouldn’t know about. Shady friends can definitely help send a relationship down the gutter fast & some of her friends come off as super shady. But then Nas on the other hand I just think needs counseling like I said before. I think they could work it out if they tried…marriage is hard, especially when people are in the limelight & if you ask me, the limelight killed their relationship…after a while if you aren’t confident enough to ignore some of this shit it will eat you up & tear you apart.
